One of the things I’ve learned about Japan from owning an imported truck is that their FM radio band is from 70-90mhz, which means your car’s radio station options will be limited. In Southern NM, that pretty much leaves only the UTEP NPR station as the non-Jesus listening option. With a non-functional power antenna, it didn’t matter much anyway. It would only go up or down with assistance, otherwise it would stick in one spot and make bad noises. Those noises weren’t all bad though, as they told me the motor was working and the problem was probably with the mast and/or cable.
With used, working power antenna assemblies running about $200+ shipping, I exercised the $30 eBay option for a new mast and cable. It showed up in the mail a few days ago, albeit with instructions printed only in languages I don’t read. I got around this afternoon to rebuilding the power antenna.
It was a slightly fiddly job figuring out the exact order of operations to get the whole thing apart, but having done it once now it would be a breeze to replace a power antenna mast/cable in the future. Having instructions in language you read would be another way to go. It turns out the nylon cable was brittle and broken. Sadly, that old grease was all over everything inside the assembly and I choose not to touch my phone and take pictures of the process.
In related news , t he tape deck works! Fixing the power antenna motivated me to dig around for some cassette tapes. At the bottom of a storage bin in the garage that once belonged to my parent’s I hit pay dirt. The finds included some Eagles tapes, the Beach Boys, Chicago’s greatest hits and Bruce Springsteen’s greatest hits. The Pajero is rocking the boss as the pick of the litter. This tape was played probably 100 times in my integra over the years by my dad before it became my car and I made a racecar out of it, so there’s a bit of continuity I like in having this tape played a time or two in the Pajero as my fun car to replace the integra.
Now that the antenna situation is sorted, I’ll look into getting a modern, single DIN radio/mp3/Bluetooth head unit to upgrade the audio situation. And yes, I’m totally going to hang onto the Japanese market Kenwood head unit. Any Oppo recommendations?

Whatever Pioneer you like the look of. Budget friendly and I’ve had good luck with them. I prefer simpler interfaces as they look better with older consoles. Often t hey’ll have color changing that gets you close to what the OEM dash lights look like.
